If you like Demons, Chinese Mythology, Supernatural Powers, and Mystery, then Legend of Exorcism can definitely grab your attention.
But the best thing about this anime isn’t just its beautiful 3D visuals.
Here, we have an Exorcist Captain who has no Spiritual Power of his own, and he has to work with a young man who is almost completely unfamiliar with the human world.
So, is Legend of Exorcism Season 1 only beautiful to look at, or is its story just as good?
Let’s find out in this spoiler-free review.
BASIC INFORMATION
Legend of Exorcism, also known as Tianbao Fuyao Lu, is a Chinese 3D Donghua.
Season 1 was released in 2020 and consists of 13 episodes.
It is based on the web novel by Fei Tian Ye Xiang.
The anime features elements of Fantasy, Action, Mystery, and the Supernatural.
And yes, Hindi audio is also available.
STORY
The story takes us to Chang’an during the Tang Dynasty.
Our main character is Hongjun, who has spent most of his life away from the human world.
But when he arrives in Chang’an, he meets Li Jinglong.
Li Jinglong is the Captain of an Exorcism Team.
And here’s the interesting part — despite being the Captain, he has no Spiritual Power of his own.
Hongjun and Li Jinglong have to work together to deal with cases involving Demons and supernatural events.
At first, the story focuses on smaller events, but gradually, a much bigger Mystery hidden behind these events begins to unfold.
And that’s what keeps your curiosity alive.
CHARACTERS
First, let’s talk about Hongjun.
He is quite Innocent and a little Naive because he hasn’t experienced the human world very closely.
On the other hand, Li Jinglong is much more Serious and Responsible.
Their personalities are very different, and that’s what makes their Chemistry interesting.
Apart from them, Mo Rigen, A-Tai, and Qiu Yongsi are also members of the Exorcism Team.
What I liked most about these Characters is that they aren’t there just for the Fights.
Their Conversations, Friendship, and Teamwork also play an important role in the Story.
STORY & PACING
Now we come to the most important part.
Is the Story actually good?
Yes, but you need to be a little Patient with it.
This isn’t an Anime where you get Non-Stop Action in every Episode.
At some points, the Story moves slowly and focuses more on Investigation and Character Interaction.
But as the Mystery develops, the Interest also keeps increasing.
For me, one of the best things about the Story is that it isn’t limited to simply defeating Demons.
It gradually expands its World and Characters as well.
ACTION & MYSTERY
When it comes to Action, the Anime has some good Supernatural Fights.
But its real Strength lies in its Mystery and Character Dynamics.
You constantly have this curiosity about what is going to happen next and what the actual reason behind these events is.
At the same time, the Dynamic between Hongjun and Li Jinglong adds an Emotional Layer to the Story.
And some Funny Moments between the Team members help balance out the more serious parts of the Story.
ANIMATION
Now let’s talk about the Anime’s biggest Strength — its 3D Animation.
Honestly, the Visuals are quite impressive.
The Character Designs, Traditional Chinese Costumes, Backgrounds, and Supernatural Effects are highly detailed.
Especially during the Demon and Power-related Scenes, the Animation looks very Attractive.
If you want to watch something different from the usual 2D Japanese Anime style, you’ll definitely find its Visual Style Interesting.
MUSIC & HINDI DUB
The Music is good and does a great job of supporting the atmosphere, especially during Emotional and Mystery Scenes.
The Original Chinese Voice Acting also works well for the Characters.
And for Indian Viewers, the good news is that Hindi Audio is available.
However, I won’t rate the Hindi Dub in too much detail because there isn’t enough reliable Public Information available to properly judge its Voice Acting Quality.
BEST THINGS
In my opinion, the biggest Strengths of this Anime are:
Number 1 — Its Unique Chinese Fantasy Setting.
Number 2 — Beautiful 3D Visuals.
Number 3 — The Interesting Chemistry between Hongjun and Li Jinglong.
Number 4 — The Mystery that is gradually revealed throughout the Story.
And Number 5 — The great Chemistry between the members of the Exorcist Team.
WEAK POINTS
Now let’s talk about its Weaknesses.
The biggest Problem is the Pacing.
Some parts can feel a little Slow.
The second Problem is that quite a few Characters and Concepts are introduced in the beginning, so it can feel a little Confusing for new Viewers.
And if you watch Anime mainly for Fast Action and Constant Fight Scenes, this Anime may not keep you Entertained all the time.
WHO SHOULD WATCH IT?
If you enjoy Chinese Mythology, Demons, Mystery, Fantasy, and Character-driven Stories, then you can definitely give this Anime a Try.
But if you only want Fast Action and Constant Fights, then this Anime might not be for you.
FINAL VERDICT
Overall, Legend of Exorcism Season 1 is a good and quite different Supernatural Fantasy Story.
Its biggest Strengths are its Visuals, Characters, and Mystery, while its biggest Weakness is its occasionally Slow Pacing.
For me, it’s a Donghua worth trying, especially if you want to explore something new in Chinese Animation.
Just keep one thing in mind before starting it — this Anime focuses more on Characters and Mystery than pure Action.
My Rating:
Story — 8/10
Characters — 8.5/10
Animation — 9/10
Music/Voice — 8/10
Entertainment — 8/10
Overall — 8.3/10
